World Oil Awards Winners Announced

Eleven Winning Companies Receive Top Honors at Global Petroleum Event

Houston, Texas – October 20, 2006 – World Oil® magazine announced the eleven winners of the 2006 World Oil Awards at the fifth annual black-tie gala dinner last night in Houston, Texas. The event, attended by close to 350 industry leaders, benefited three universities that offer programs leading to careers in the petroleum industry. This year's program also gave special tribute the past winners of the World Oil Awards, which were established in 2002.

Marathon Oil Company won "The Health, Safety, Environment/Sustainable Development Award" for their Bioko Island Malaria Control Project. The "Innovative Thinkers Award" was given to Medhat Mickael, PhD, Weatherford International Ltd., for his involvement in revolutionizing the design process for logging-while-drilling (LWD) and wireline tools. China National Petroleum Corporation was honored with the "Best Production Technology Award" for a series of breakthroughs in enhanced oil recovery. Other winners included Baker Oil Tools for their Z-Seal Metal-to-Metal Technology and IntelliServ (A Grant Prideco Company) for The IntelliServ Network. Schlumberger received top honors for its Petrel application in the "Best Data Visualization" category.

"The World Oil Awards, now in its fifth year, exists to recognize outstanding accomplishments and foster new leadership in the oil and gas industry," explained Alexandra Pruner, Publisher of World Oil® magazine. "The quality and geographic diversity of the nominations received this year is very encouraging." The eleven award categories span virtually all aspects of the upstream industry, ranging from Best Drilling Technology to Best Outreach Program Award.

"In addition to the winning entries, this year's program garnered nominations from companies, individuals and government organizations from around the world, signifying a strong momentum and solid future for our industry," Pruner commented.

The complete list of winners at the 2006 World Oil Awards is:

  1. The New Horizons Idea Award: The IntelliServ Network, IntelliServ (A Grant Prideco Company)
  2. Best Drilling Technology Award: PeriScope 15, Schlumberger
  3. Best Production Technology Award: Inject steam and/or flue gas to boost oil output and sequester CO2, China National Petroleum Corporation
  4. Best Completion Technology Award: Z-Seal Metal-to-Metal Technology, Baker Oil Tools
  5. Best Fluids Award: FAZEPRO, M-I SWACO
  6. Best Exploration Technology Award: Reverse Time Migration, GX Technology
  7. Best Outreach Program Award: The Greater Houston Energy Education Collaborative (GHEEC)
  8. Best Data Management Solution Award: LOWIS Life-of-the-Well Information System, Weatherford International Ltd.
  9. Best Data Visualization Solution Award: Petrel, Schlumberger
  10. The Innovative Thinkers Award: Medhat Mickael, PhD, Weatherford International Ltd.
  11. The Health, Safety, Environment/Sustainable Development Award: The Bioko Island Malaria Control Project, Marathon Oil

The 2006 World Oil Awards benefited the University of Adelaide in Australia, University of Stellenbosch, and University of Wyoming. This program garnered hundreds of submissions from points around the globe. A third-party Advisory Board, comprised of 22 senior industry executives and academics and The Next Generation Committee, comprised of up-and-coming leaders in the petroleum industry who are recent graduates, judged the short list of nominees.

The 2006 World Oil Awards were generously sponsored by Halliburton, Hewlett-Packard, Schlumberger and Weatherford. This year's event also featured an after-hours party hosted by Baker Hughes.
